Somebody is always trying to scare you. Sometimes it is an accident of the news. Very often, it is a business model โ fear holds eyes, eyes are sold, and frightened people are easier to sell to and easier to steer.
This page pushes back, calmly and on the record. It shows how the fear machine works, hands you a check you can run on any scary claim, keeps a shelf of steady numbers, and โ for the nights the fear will not let go โ it sits with you a while. One promise, up front: this page collects nothing. No accounts, no sign-ups, no forms. It only teaches.
Fear is a feeling. These days it is also a product โ manufactured on purpose, sold on purpose. Here is how the product gets made.
Your attention is the product. Outlets and feeds do not sell you the news โ they sell your eyes to advertisers, and calm information does not hold eyes. Fear does. A calm headline lets you scroll on with your day; a frightening one stops your thumb, spikes your pulse, and keeps you watching.
So fear is what gets manufactured โ not because everyone in the business is a villain, but because the machine pays for whatever holds you, and fear holds best.
Nobody needs a conspiracy for this to work. The systems that rank your feed promote whatever gets a reaction, and dread reacts strongest. In 2018, researchers at MIT published a study in Science that tracked roughly 126,000 stories shared by about 3 million people on Twitter between 2006 and 2017. Their finding, in their own words: “Falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information.”
The same study found the false stories drew replies full of fear, disgust, and surprise. The lie outruns the truth for a simple reason: the lie is free to be built for carrying. The truth has to be what it is.
Predictions of collapse sell books, courses, bunkers, freeze-dried food, miracle cures, and subscriptions. So learn to ask one question of every prophet of doom: what is for sale on the next page?
If the fear comes with a shopping cart, you are not the audience. You are the customer. That does not automatically make the warning false โ it tells you exactly how hard to check it before you let it live in your head. The check is below.
One scary headline does almost nothing. A hundred a day, every day, for years, quietly rebuilds what a whole people believes is normal. The end product is not one big panic โ it is a frightened population that has stopped checking, because checking everything feels impossible.
It is not impossible. It is five steps. And a frightened mind is the product being sold โ which means a calm, checking mind is worth money to nobody, and everything to you.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
โ 2 Timothy 1:7 ยท King James Version
Run any scary claim through these five steps before you believe it โ and before you share it. Sharing is believing, out loud, with your name on it.
Find the original source โ not a screenshot of a screenshot, not a post about a post. Who is the human or the institution standing behind this, with their name and their record?
If nobody will stand behind it, hold it at arm's length. Anonymous is not automatically false โ but it has earned zero trust for free.
Say the claim back in one plain sentence, with its numbers and its dates attached. What precisely is supposed to happen, to whom, by when?
If it cannot be said plainly, it is not a claim โ it is a mood. Moods are manufactured. Claims can be checked.
Old news recirculated as new is the oldest trick in the book โ a real photo from a real event, five years ago, in a different country, wearing today's date.
And if the claim is a prediction, ask the killer question: has its date already passed? The Steady Shelf below keeps a file of those.
Look for primary records: the actual document, the actual data, the actual footage, the agency whose job it is. Two outlets repeating one anonymous post is not two confirmations โ it is one claim with an echo.
Commentary about commentary is not confirmation. Go to the source, or hold your verdict.
Follow the incentive. Who sells more, raises more, or rules more easily if you are frightened? Fear is a currency โ somebody is being paid in it.
A gain does not settle whether the claim is true. It tells you how hard to check โ and whether you are being informed, or harvested.
Anything engineered to make you feel something instantly is engineered, period. Real emergencies are calm and specific; they do not need your emotions farmed first.
You are allowed to wait an hour. You are allowed to wait a day. Almost nothing true becomes false while you check it โ and almost nothing false survives being checked.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
โ John 14:27 ยท King James Version
Fear says the world is ending. The long numbers โ from the world's own bookkeeping โ tell a slower and steadier story. Every figure below names its source and its year. Check them yourself; that is the whole point.
Doom is loud and daily. Progress is quiet and slow, so it never trends. Here is some of the quiet, on the record:
None of this claims the world is fine, or that your hard year is not real. It says the direction of the long story is not the direction the fear machine advertises. Both things can be true at once โ but only one of them gets shouted at you.
Expired predictions are the receipts of this whole page: scary claims whose dates came, and went, and left the world standing. Nobody mails you a correction when a doom fails โ it just quietly gets replaced by the next one. So we keep the file.
Radio preacher Harold Camping predicted the end, and his ministry spread it on more than 5,000 billboards. The date passed. He moved it to October 21, 2011 โ that passed too. In March 2012, Camping wrote: “We humbly acknowledge we were wrong about the timing.” (Associated Press)
Built on a reading of the Maya calendar. NASA answered on its own page: “The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.” December 22, 2012 arrived right on schedule. (NASA)
Computers worldwide were supposed to fail at midnight. After more than a year of alarm, preparation, and repair work, the Encyclopaedia Britannica records: “few major failures occurred in the transition from December 31, 1999, to January 1, 2000.” This one carries the honest lesson in both directions: people worked hard to fix it โ preparation is not panic, and quiet work beats loud dread.
Memory is the antidote. A prediction with a date is a checkable claim โ and when its date passes, it joins this file.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
โ Psalm 46:1 ยท King James Version
The rest of this page is about headlines. This part is about the fear that is in the room with you โ the kind that does not care about facts. If that is you tonight, this part was written for you.
Fear that will not quit is not a character flaw, and it is not a failure of faith. Bodies and brains carry alarms, and alarms can get stuck โ in strong people, faithful people, people everyone else leans on.
A stuck alarm is something that happens to a person. It is not who the person is.
When you are drowning, grand advice is useless. Start small and physical: cut the news diet โ check once a day instead of forty times; the world will still be there. Sleep on a schedule. Get outside and move. Work with your hands. Eat real food. Tell one real person the truth about how you are.
None of that is magic. All of it is how people have steadied themselves for as long as there have been people.
Fear grows in the dark, alone, at 3 a.m. It shrinks in company. A friend. A family member. A church. A group that meets in a church basement and drinks bad coffee and tells the truth.
Let somebody else hold a corner of the weight. That is not burdening them. That is what people are for.
If fear is crushing your daily life โ if you cannot sleep, cannot work, cannot get through the day โ then talking to a doctor or a counselor is a strength move, the same as a cast on a broken arm. No shame attaches to it. None.
And for the darkest moments: in the United States, call or text 988 โ the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline โ free, day and night, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Outside the U.S., the International Association for Suicide Prevention keeps a directory of crisis lines, country by country: iasp.info/crisis-centres-helplines. The numbers differ by country. The help exists in yours.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
โ Isaiah 41:10 ยท King James Version
Every claim on this page stands on a source you can open yourself. That is not decoration โ it is the whole method of the page, applied to the page:
Verses are quoted from the King James Version, a published translation in the public domain, and are referenced under each one. If anything on this page is ever wrong, the correction standard is the same as the building standard: a primary source, opened and checked.
